The name “Five Points” was given to the area because the region northeast of downtown Denver marked the end of the tramway and the street car signs were not large enough to list all of the street names. A major thoroughfare, Welton Street, is busy with retail and restaurant venues. There are over 75 businesses on Welton Street and the light rail line takes residents directly into Denver. Welton Street is one of only a few African-American owned commercial districts in America.
Many well-known Afircan-Amercan musicians like Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton played in Five Points clubs, stopping as they travelled across America. The historic Rossonian Hotel where they stayed still is in existence. Five Points places of interest include the Black American West Museum, the Blair-Caldwell African American research Library, Roundtree Art Center, and the Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble Studios.
There are new housing developments in the area, including Downing Street Station at 29th and Downing and The Point at 26th and Washington. Average sales price is $562,612. Median price is $449,500.
