By 1880 the United States was beginning to close frontier forts since the Native Americans had been moved to reservations. The citizens of denver, then a rather isolated city wanted an army post in their area. In 1887 contributions and citizens led to the purchase of 640 acres nine miles south of the Union Train Station in Denver. Soldiers from the 18th Infantry occupied the site in October 1887.
The fort was eventually named for John Alexander Logan, a major general who commanded volunteer forces in the Civil War. As a commander of the GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) a veteran’s organization, he established May 30 as Decoration Day (later called Memorial Day) to honor the Civil War dead.
Units from Fort Logan were sent to Cuba during the Spanish American War, which began in 1898. Utilized by various militaru units over the years, fort Logan was finally closed in 1946, although the hospital was utilized until the new Veteran’s Administration Hospital opened in Denver in 1951. In 1949 Fort Logan National Cemetery was created on 214 acres at the post.
In 1960 308 acres of the fort land was given to the state for a hospital, Fort Logan Mental Health Center. There are still many historic buildings remaining. In 1991 the name was changed to the Colrado Mental health Institure at fort Logan.
