Gateway Colorado sits in the midst of the Uncompahgre Plateau, Pinon Mesa and La Sal Mountains. It is surrounded by tall canyon walls. The first settlers cam in 1884. Among theme were miners and fur traders. In 1903 a small school was built and the next year the post opened and was called Gateway.
The lumber trade, cattle ranching and mining were the mainstays of the community. Uranium mining was an economic stalemate for years. When the uranium mining stopped the town became desolate. Many residents moved away. It was only with the opening of the Gateway Canyon Resort and Auto Museum that the town began to blossom with restaurants and shops. Sports like kyacking, fly-fishing and horseback riding attract tourists. The Auto Museum is a testimony to the development of the automobile. The museum encompasses 30,000 feet and displays more than 40 cars.
