Jefferson Park was originally part of the town of Highland, part of the Congressional Land Grant of 1860. Considered Denver’s first suburb, it lay across the river. Highland was a “blue law town”, while Denver was noted for its wild ways. The people of Highland looked down their noses at Denver; however, that’s where the jobs were, and the Denver mayor told the Highland citizens that the price of a viaduct over the railroad yards and the Platte River was annexation to Denver. Highland became known as North Denver. As the city grew larger, a new neighborhood was named Jefferson Park, after the 6.7 acre park at its heart.
Jefferson Park is home to residences of the 1890s, the 1910s, the 1940-s and ‘50s. By 1960 the neighborhood had begun to deteriorate, and was ignored by the city until the 1990s, when the city of Denver began to focus on infrastructure and beautification. Jefferson Park has become one of the most sought-after Denver areas due to its proximity to downtown Denver. With reasonable housing prices and continued development, its future seems assured. Median sales price is $324,133 and average listing is $397,738.
